Illinois dermatologists are defending the tweet that was shared by a student who described a white woman as “a cancer” and said she would “destroy white people” in a rant that included racial slurs.
A student at the Illinois Institute of Dermatology tweeted Tuesday about a white female dermatologist, who said she was going to “destroy White people,” and later deleted the tweet.
The student, who did not want to be identified, said she didn’t want to comment on the specifics of the post, but called it a “terrible, terrible mistake.”
The tweet, which was sent Monday, was in response to a question from a female student about the recent spate of hate crimes and the comments by some white women, the university said in a statement.
The student said she believes the tweets were meant to provoke a conversation.
“It’s a horrible, terrible, horrible mistake,” she said.
“You’re supposed to be able to have a conversation.”
The students’ statement said they had received death threats and called for a campuswide discussion about racism and discrimination.
The school has said it would address the tweet with the student in question.
